Pre-Launch: This guide will be updated with verified information when Nioh 3 launches on February 6, 2026.

Launch Day Checklist

Before you start playing, make sure you've done these:

  • Check system requirements — See the PC specs section on the homepage
  • Pre-load the game — Available on PS5 and Steam before launch
  • Decide on your first weapon — See weapon comparison
  • Review a starter build — Check build templates
  • Bookmark this page — Reference during your first session

Your First 30 Minutes

Here's what to expect and what to focus on during the opening of Nioh 3:

1. Character Creation (5-10 min)

Cosmetic choices only — no gameplay impact. You can change appearance later, so don't spend too long here. Pick a look you like and move on.

2. Starting Weapon Selection

You'll choose two weapons to start. For new players, we recommend:

  • Primary: Katana — Balanced, versatile, works everywhere
  • Secondary: Spear — Safe reach for tough enemies

See all 14 weapons if you want alternatives.

3. Tutorial Area

The opening area teaches core mechanics. Pay attention to:

  • Stance switching — R1 + face buttons to change
  • Ki Pulse — Press R1 after attacks to recover Ki
  • Blocking vs dodging — Block is safer for beginners
  • Item shortcuts — Set up healing items early

4. First Shrine

At the shrine, you can level up, change gear, and manage skills. Early priorities:

  • Put points in your weapon's scaling stat (check weapon details)
  • Unlock 1-2 active skills for your primary weapon
  • Equip the best armor you've found (weight matters for dodge speed)

5. Before the First Boss

Before engaging the first real boss:

  • Practice Ki Pulse timing on regular enemies
  • Have healing items ready
  • Check the boss guide if you're struggling

Early Game Tips

Don't Hoard Items

Use consumables freely. You'll find more. Dying with full items helps no one.

Explore Thoroughly

Hidden paths contain Kodama (permanent bonuses) and useful gear.

Learn One Weapon First

Master your primary weapon before experimenting. Depth beats breadth early.

Blocking is Fine

Perfect dodging is advanced. Block + punish works through most early content.
